Save water with eco-friendly solutions

Local water saving expert Charlene Pienaar offers Zululanders advice on how best to save water in simple yet effective ways during this water crisis.

CHECK your water bills at home. Make a note of what your usage is and set goals to decrease this number.

Did you know? 37% of water is lost which costs South Africans about R7.2 billion annually.

Take water conservation to the garden by planting indigenous drought-resistant plants.

Prioritise investing in a rainwater tank. Using rain water minimizes the losses from piped systems and this is untreated so has a lower carbon-footprint.

Install a grey-water system and recycle water at home.

‘Generally, 40-60% of household water is used for non-essential purposes, such as watering gardens and filling swimming pools,’ says Charlene.

Tap water uses less energy and water than bottled water, and bottled water uses less than cool drinks. Quench your thirst first from the tap!

Use the economy cycle on your dishwasher and washing machine to save water and energy.

Be water wise and purchase water-efficient devices and water-saving appliances. Due Green is a local company that provides eco-friendly water solutions.
