Career guidance boost for pupils

High school pupils were offered information on career development in eSikhaleni

THOUSANDS of pupils were exposed to a learning and career guidance programme during the provincial Nelson Mandela Day Career Development Festival at uMfolozi TVET College in eSikhaleni last week.

They were provided with information on careers by various organisations such as the Siyakha Education Trust and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

This learning project aimed to inspire and empower rural pupils. It addressed career and educational issues with an innovative approach, such as ‘Learning is Fun’ – giving pupils the opportunity to rise above their circumstances.

‘We say people with proper education have the power of choice. Liaising closely with communities, we work towards advancing academic skills among the country’s youth,’ said Siyakha Education Trust’s Chief Operating Officer, Keziah Venter.

Pupils were also addressed by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Mduduzi Manana, on Friday.

He encouraged them to utilise the opportunities available to them.

‘Making a career choice is one of the most important decisions pupils make. It is therefore vital that they receive proper information and obtain expert advice before they make such decisions.

‘The festival is targeted at high school pupils residing in rural areas because they have historically been the least serviced, and have lagged behind in development,’ said Manana.

To provide a power of choice for pupils, the Siyakha Education Trust supplement for matriculants entitled ‘Final Countdown 2015’, will be inserted on 4 August in the Eyethu Bay Watch and on 6 August in the Eyethu Zululand publications.
