Hadeda rescue mission

A hadeda was seeing flying around Arboretum with an arrow lodged in one of its wings

THE Richards Bay SPCA has expressed outrage after another animal cruelty incident was reported on Tuesday afternoon.

‘We responded to a call from a concerned member of the public who noticed an injured bird. It was reported that a hadeda had been flying around Via Cassandria in Arboretum with an arrow lodged in one of the its wings,’ said SPCA Manager Kobie Littlejohn.

One of the Inspectors, Shelly Prinsloo, confirmed they have been unable to capture the injured bird.

‘At the moment, the bird is still in full flying mode and is reportedly going from one roof top to the next.

‘Unfortunately, we cannot just dart the bird with a tranquillizer because it could die.

‘We request the public to contact us when they see this bird so that we can capture it and transport it to the nearest vet,’ she said.

Prinsloo also highlighted that there have been several cases involving monkeys being shot with pellet guns.

‘These monkeys are being shot in the head and close to their hearts, and owing to the severity of the injuries, we are being forced to euthanise them,’ she said.

The issue regarding animal cruelty in Richards Bay has been a recent hot topic of discussion among residents following numerous reports concerning illegal hunting.

With a zero tolerance policy to animal cruelty, the SPCA urges the public to report any cruelty they witness.

The animal shelter can be contacted on 035 7532086 during office hours, and on 073 5514564 for after-hour emergencies.
