Five animals who mate for life

Through thick and thin, all for love

HUMANS (some) like to think of themselves as a faithful species, but when it comes to true fidelity, other animals offer better examples of how to keep a relationship together.

Here are five animals who stick together forever:

1. Gibbons are the nearest relatives to humans that mate for life. The coupled male and female spend time grooming each other and hanging out together in the trees.

2. Swans form monogamous pair bonds that last for many years. Their loyalty is so storied that the image of two swans swimming with their necks entwined in the shape of a heart has become a nearly universal symbol of love.

3. French angelfish live, travel and even hunt in pairs. The fish last as long as both individuals are alive and act as a team to defend their territory against neighbouring pairs. In other words, Bonnie and Clyde of the animal kingdom.

4. Many great musicians sing of inseparable love but the albatross put it in perspective. They may fly great distances over the oceans, but despite its extensive travels, this bird will always return to the same place and the same partner when it’s time to breed.

5. Oh beloved penguins! Despite numerous challenges when it comes to raising offspring in harsh conditions, they persevere in the name of monogamy and love.
