Destitute family to receive new home

The destitute family lost all their possessions after their home burnt down last month

THE generosity of local businesses and community members means the Mangalelwa family in Sigisi will soon live under a new roof.

The destitute family lost all their possessions after their home burnt down last month.

Eleven members of the family were then forced to live in a shed in appalling and cramped conditions.

But through new formed partnerships this week, two companies – Lafarge and Baybricks – came on board to donate cement and bricks for an initiative that will see a new home being built for the destitute family on Nelson Mandela Day this Saturday.

Spearheaded by community member and SANCA Zululand Chairperson Bheki Gumbi, individuals, churches and businesses have rallied to raise funds to build the three-bedroom home after the plight of the family was made known by Sigisi Primary School Principal Mandlakhe Khoza.

Groceries, blankets, linen and towels were also donated to the family last week by the Zululand Observer’s charity arm DICE (Do I Care Enough?) and Protea Richards Bay.

‘We thank our sponsors for assisting in changing the lives of this family. All is on track for the construction of the new home on Saturday. We welcome volunteers to assist us in building the home,’ said Gumbi.
