Be water wise at home

10 tips to save water at home

WITH a severe drought affecting our region and water-shedding in the pipeline, here are some easy and practical tips to save water at home.

1. When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink to wash and the other to rinse.

2. Run your washing and dish-washing machines only when they are full. You can save up to 3000 litres a month.

3. Keep a water bottle in the fridge instead of running the tap.

4. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and paving.

5. Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water house plants

6. Don’t use running water to thaw food. Defrost your food in the sun or even the fridge for water efficiency

7. Do not leave the tap running while brushing your teeth. You could save as much as 150 litres a month.

8. When washing your hands, do not let the water run while you lather.

9. Shower rather than bath as a norm. If you prefer to bath, share the water.

10. Fill up the kettle to the level you actually need when boiling water, and similarly when using water in cooking.
