An alleged hijacker is facing 47 charges and more will be added, says State

AN alleged crime kingpin, charged with 47 counts relating to the hijacking of luxury vehicles, appeared in the Richards Bay District Court on Friday.

Bongumusa Shabalala (34) is charged with 15 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, involving several Toyota Fortuners, a Prado, Toyota Hilux double cabs, a Range Rover and a Ford Ranger.

He is also charged with 31 counts of kidnapping, one attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances, three counts of theft and one of possession of a 9mm semi-automatic fire arm with an altered serial number and 35 live rounds of ammunition.

The State Prosecutor, Mr Njakazi, informed the court that the State intends adding more charges.

Shabalala is currently in custody.

The case has been remanded until 24 July for a pre-trial conference.
