Blood collections need big boost

Cold weather dampens blood collections

BLOOD stocks have reached a critical low with only a 2.6 day supply available and donors are urged to donate at their nearest donor centre or mobile clinics.

Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre is promoting their Mandela Day drive at the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre this Friday between 9am to 4.30pm and the public is being called to pledge their 67 minutes of goodwill by saving a life with the gift of blood.

Traditionally the winter months are a difficult time for collections as schools and universities are closed for holidays and an increase in illnesses such as the flu have a great impact on blood collection.

SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival.
