Ice cream fridge thieves frozen in their tracks

The cool trio pretended to be Ola staff, collecting the fridges from stores in Empangeni and Richards Bay.

OWNERS of an Empangeni curry shop and sales staff from Ola have apprehended two men believed to be responsible for the theft of at least 10 ice cream fridges in recent months.

One suspect managed to escape the sticky situation of the impromptu sting set up by the owners of The Corner Curry Cafè, a security company as well as Ola Zululand Sales Manager Pieter Kaldenberg and Maintenance Manager Wayne Schlanders.

The trio have allegedly been ripping off the ice cream company for the past few months, by pretending to be Ola maintenance staff collecting fridges. They used a Tata bakkie for the heists.

However, their cool plan came to an abrupt end when the curry cafe owner cottoned on to their scheme.

‘When the one man came in and told me he would be coming to get the fridge later, I knew something wasn’t right,’ said the one owner of the curry shop.

‘I phoned Ola and they told me about the other fridges that were stolen.’

Cooler heads prevailed, and the suspects were apprehended without major incident.

‘We only know of about ten fridges so far,’ said Kaldenberg.

‘Hopefully more information will surface now.’

Police arrived on scene shortly thereafter, taking custody of the suspected criminals.
