4 tips to kick junk food cravings

Tasty yet healthier snacks to fight the flab.

ON that frosty night when you are curled up in front of the television, a slice of delectable creamy cheesecake undoubtedly makes for good company.

That is the moment where all self-control must be exercised because summer bodies are made in winter.

Here are a few helpful tips to outsmart the cravings of junk food:

1. When you crave something creamy like that mouth-watering cheesecake, cheesy macaroni or risotto instead snack on some sugar-free jelly, hummus or a bowl of velvety soup.

2. On crunchy days like those salty chips, chocolate rich biscuits or even caramel popcorn, supplement it with a handful of baby carrots, some fruit slices or even rice cakes. Almond nuts can also work and they are packed with useful nutrients like Vitamin E, ‘good’ fat’ and fibre, which is highly satiating and provides bulk to food without adding calories. They are also helpful with sugar cravings, plus the oleic oil in the nuts cuts hunger very quickly.

3. Desiring to quench your thirst with a tall glass of coke will not aid the battle of the bulge. Instead, sip on flavoured sparkling water or lightly sweetened iced tea. Studies suggest that limiting kilojoule-filled beverages leads to weight loss. Or try a smoothie – the thicker and more whipped the drink, the more satisfying it will be, saving you kilojoules at your next meal. To achieve maximum thickness, toss in a banana and blend.

4. Even though winter nights call for pizza, ‘slap chips’ or burgers, try stick to baked sweet potato chips or thin-crust pizza with veggies. Choose 90 percent or higher lean beef – your taste buds will not know the difference.
