Illegal hunting in Richards Bay suburb

A Meerensee green belt has become a hot spot for illegal hunting and criminal activity.

WHAT was once appreciated as a scenic piece of greenbelt land in Meerensee has now become a prime site for criminals and hunters.

This after the municipality recently built a road to lay and service water pipes adjacent to Krewelkring and Kolstertkring.

Since then, neighbouring residents have forwarded numerous complaints of increased criminal activity, with gangs using the new access as a thoroughfare.

On Tuesday afternoon, two middle-aged men tried to scurry off with a pack of about eight hunting dogs, when they were confronted for reportedly hunting wild animals.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife District Conservation Manager, Frans Mthembu confirmed he was notified about the incident and responded immediately.

‘I chased after the two suspects and managed to catch them. Along with their hunting dogs, they were found with a striped mongoose.

‘Their names and pictures were taken, and they were given a warning. Should they be caught again, they will face serious consequences.’

According to Mthembu, this is not the first incident occurring in Meerensee, and he advises the public to contact the organisation for any suspicions about illegal hunting.

‘These people are known for hunting monkeys and mongoose for their own consumption.

‘We encourage the public to contact us and we will handle the situation,’ he added.

Aside from hunting wild animals, residents have also seen suspects raiding bee colonies for honey.

One of the residents, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation said, ‘These animals used to live in peace, but now their safety is being jeapordised. I cannot understand why somebody would want to hurt them.

‘We need to look after our green belts.

‘Another worry is that vagrants are seen walking this path on a daily basis, which makes us feel unsafe in our homes.’
