Melmoth officer arrested for corruption

Sting operation leads to arrest and more are expected.

A MELMOTH traffic officer has been arrested on corruption charges after allegedly soliciting a bribe from a truck driver.

He appeared in the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was remanded to 13 July when he will apply for bail.

The Hawks Anti-Corruption Unit arrested the 33-year-old cop on 3 July after the truck driver reported the alleged bribe attempt to his manager.

According to the report, the truck driver told his manager that the vehicle was impounded at the weighbridge in Melmoth for not being roadworthy as it had faulty brakes.

It was parked in the Mthonjaneni Municipality Protection Services premises and R2 500 was demanded for the truck’s release.

The Hawks Anti-Corruption Unit were called in to investigate the matter.

A sting operation was conducted which led to the arrest of the traffic officer.

The police are continuing their investigations and further arrests are expected soon.

An appeal has also been made for any truck owners who have had similar experiences in Melmoth to come forward with the information.
