5 Ways to keep your motorbike safe
With bike theft on the rise, here's what you can do to keep your ride safe
BIKERS, it’s time to rethink the security measures you have placed around your pride and joy.
Motorcycle thieves are operating in Empangeni and Richards Bay and it seems they are on the hunt for anything with two-wheels.
At least 10 superbikes, scooters and scramblers have disappeared without a trace.
Here are five ways you can protect your ride, short of hiring an armed guard:
Lock it up
With a chain, a steel bracket, massive padlocks – anything you can think of. If your wife is the understanding type, park it inside the house. The living room should be fine, the bedroom would be pushing it.
Never assume
Don’t ever assume your bike is safe, even outside a shopping mall or in your garage. All it takes is two guys, two minutes and a bakkie, and your bike is gone.
Tracking
Get a tracking system installed. For most systems you pay a once-off installation fee and then a monthly fee of about R200. This will help with recovery if your bike is taken, and might even lower your insurance premium.
Be aware
Take a walk around your yard every so often when you get up for a midnight snack. Your movement could scare waiting crooks off.
Light it up
If it’s dark in the area you leave your bike at night, think about installing a movement activated spotlight. No-gooders don’t like working in the light.
If you have done all these things, and you are still not satisfied, get a pair of Rottweilers to call your own. They are a surprisingly strong counter measure to theft of any kind.
These tips can apply to cars also, so tighten up that perimeter, and stay abreast of crime trends in your area.
