Armed guard gunned down during robbery

An armed response guard was shot in the head during a robbery in the Empangeni CBD

AN armed response security guard has been shot in the head while responding to a robbery at a store in Empangeni CBD this morning.

The man, believed to be in his early 30’s, was rushed to Life Empangeni Garden Clinic in a serious condition just before 9am this morning.

Employees inside the New Goodwill Superstore on Biyela Street activated the panic alarm at 8.13am.

When the guard arrived on scene, at least three armed men were inside the store already. Employees had been taken to the back of the store and ordered to lie on their stomachs, and then searched for valuables.

It is believed the guard entered the store and was shot in the back of the head by one of the robbers, who subsequently fled on foot.

The wounded man was taken to hospital by Meditrax Ambulance Service, and will be transferred to Life Entabeni Hospital in Durban, where he will undergo treatment by a neurosurgeon.

He is currently in a serious but stable condition.

The suspects made off with the guards’ firearm, surveillance camera recording equipment and approximately R13 000 in cash.
