UPDATE: Traffic cop recovers in hospital

Officer Msawenkosi Mnguni was one of two traffic officials who were injured when an unlicensed taxi driver ploughed into them on Friday.

CITY traffic officer Msawenkosi Mnguni (53), one of two officials knocked over by a mini bus taxi on Friday, is recovering in hospital.

They were injured when an allegedly speeding white Quantum ploughed into them at an Alton robots roadblock at around 7am.

Mnguni woke up at Netcare The Bay Hospital several hours later with a number of broken bones, including a fractured right arm.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer from his ICU bed, a sedated Mnguni said he could not recall what had happened.

The taxi was reportedly travelling at high speed and the driver failed to stop when traffic officials waved him down.

Present at the scene soon after the incident was the city’s Head of Public Safety and Security, Zolile Poswa.

‘One of the passengers alleged that the driver’s visibility was impaired due to the taxi’s misted windscreen,’ said Poswa.

‘She claimed she warned him of this risk and also advised him to slow down but he got angry with her and continued to drive recklessly.

‘Aside from shock, no serious injuries were reported from passengers in the taxi.

‘We had also discovered that the driver of the vehicle did not have an official driver’s license.

‘Police officers arrested him for reckless driving and he was taken into custody,’ Poswa said.
