Cop hands himself over to Hawks

Second Rapid Rail Police Unit cop charged with corruption of a police official.

A CONSTABLE from the Rapid Rail Police Unit (RRPU) in Durban, handed himself over to the Hawks on Thursday, after learning that a warrant for his arrest was issued on suspicion of police corruption.

Cst Ravendran Govender appeared in the Richards Bay District Court, following dooming statements by Tanzanian citizens arrested by the RRPU during special operations in Richards Bay.

They are implicating Govender in the State’s case against Cst Bhekikhaya Mjiyakha, also charged with corruption of a police official.

The RRPU, was reportedly here for special operations and arrested seven Tanzanians on charges of possession of narcotics.

Cst Govender allegedly thereafter ordered Mjiyakha to collect money from a relative of one of the men in custody.

The Hawks swooped down on Mjiyakha in late June, after he allegedly demanded payment of R1 000 from a Tanzanian citizen for the release of his brother.

The man however reported to investigating officer, Warrant Officer Ryno Louw that the police arrested his brother and other Tanzanians on unknown charges and demanded payment.

While being interviewed, the policeman phoned the man again, ordering him to bring the money to a CBD fast food outlet in five minutes.

The Hawks swiftly arranged a special operation and arrested Mjiyakha, with his police service pistol, police identification and a packet of heroin in his possession.

At the police station, the Hawks found other members of the unit, with seven arrested Tanzanians.

All charges against the Tanzanians have since been withdrawn.

According to one complainant, it was the second time it has happened to him.

Both accused were released on bail and the matter was remanded until 7 July for further investigation.
