UPDATE: Eyewitness tells of crazy Kwambo shootout

Kwambonambi cops win 30 minute shootout.

THE initial shotgun volley in front of the SaveMor store was aimed at the police – but it grabbed the attention of a host of alarmed residents who ducked for cover as the stillness of the small town was shattered.

It also triggered a barrage of cellphone and online messages as Kwambonambi folk thought themselves under attack.

One person even viciously accused his neighbour of discharging fireworks.

Among those who responded to the gunfire was Scotty Brisley, who lives directly opposite the store in Regia Street.

‘I heard the shotgun blasts and ran to get my dogs inside, locked the gates and switched off all the lights.

‘Peeking over the kitchen counter I could see what was going on and watched the police arrive in numbers to take on the criminals.

‘I was very impressed with the bravery of the cops, as well as how quickly they got there and assessed the situation.

‘Shots went off every few seconds for about 30 minutes until the gang fled, some of them running right past my house,’ said Scotty.

‘My fear was that they would try to grab a getaway vehicle or a hostage but they ran over the rail lines towards the Slovo Camp.

‘It was scary stuff and I am still shaken,’ he told the Zululand Observer soon after the incident.
