Tax season now open

Here is a quick look at the most important points to remember when filing your tax return.

Well folks, it’s time to whip out the calculators and logbooks, or place a few calls to your accountant – tax filing season is officially open.

At midnight on Tuesday, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) opened the floodgates. Now the onus is on the taxpayer to ensure the proper documentation is filed.

The filing will be for the period of 1 March 2014 to 8 February 2015.

The most common required documentation you need to file:

– IRP5 issued by employer;
– Proof of medical expenses, eg medical aid and other invoices
– Interest received certificate
– Travel logbook (if undertaking business travel on behalf of employer).

Important deadlines for the 2015 tax season:

September 30 2015: Manual/postal submissions
November 27 2015: At a SARS branch (non-provisional)
November 27 2015: eFiling (non-provisional)
January 29 2016: Provisional taxpayers via eFiling

Even though you might think you have lots of time to get it all filed away, it’s better to complete your returns sooner rather than later.
