CHANGING of the presidential guard and bestowing of a prestigious Paul Harris Fellow award were the highlights of the Richards Bay Rotary Club’s induction dinner held at the Blue Marlin Guest House on Friday.

The chains of office for 2015/2016 were handed over by President Leon Willemse and Ann President Zelda to their successors, Chris and Iris Valentine – the 31st couple to be so honoured since the chapter was formed in 1983.

In his incoming address, Chris named a few objectives he would tackle, the first of which is the need to use new technologies in a changing business, social and communications environment.

Arranging more functions with interesting guest speaker would entice new members, while the establishment of satellite clubs is to be investigated.

‘I will certainly build on the wonderful record of those who went before me when it comes to fundraising and community projects and want to ensure all members are continuously involved as this ensures they don’t resign,’ said Chris.

‘My philosophy is to do all your tasks well – even those you don’t like.’

Serving the community

Outgoing President Leon Willemse touched on the numerous high points of his year in office, which had seen an income of R235 300 from fundraising projects against a budget of R160 000.

He named Willem de Waal as ‘Rotarian of the Year’ while the corresponding ‘Rotary Ann of the Year’ was given to Zelda van den Heever.

Willemse also had the honour of presenting a Paul Harris Fellow award to stalwart Rotary Ann, Diane Gray, whose list of achievements in serving the community was warmly appreciated by Rotarians and guests at the function, which continued into the late hours as members wound down in anticipation of another eventful and challenging year ahead.
