New Rotary Presidents step up

EIGHT thousand pairs of shoes, 4 500 bicycles, 80 water tanks, 15 wheel chairs, 150 dictionaries, 420 Santa shoe boxes, 740 food parcels, 1 750 toys and thousands of touched lives.

These are just a few of the numbers the Rotary Club of Empangeni can boast with for 2014.

Rotarians gathered at the Empangeni Country Club last Friday evening to induct new president, Verna Govender, and to say thank you to outgoing president, Christo van Heerden.

Christo handed over the reigns to Verna, but not before giving his report on the achievements of the Rotary Club in the past year.

‘We are proud to say that we have made a considerable difference this year,’ he said.

‘There was a lot more sport related activities, but that’s what you get when you elect a young guy like me as your president.’

Verna unveiled her new theme for Rotary, ‘Be a gift to the world’, which the Rotarians will adopt as they go about changing the lives of thousands of the less fortunate.

‘It is indeed an honour and a privilege to serve,’ she said. ‘This is a very special day for me.’

Another new president was also inducted, Gideon van der Merwe who will be leading the charge for the Mtunzini satellite club.

The Mtunzini Rotary Club was founded last year, and is looking forward to growing in strength.
