UPDATE: Kildare Crime Crew assists SAPS

As crime escalates, residents are asking what can be done?

THE Kildare Crime Crew (KCC), a neighbourhood watch group, has received praise from local police, who say the initiative is necessary.

The group patrols their streets by night, and keeps informed by using a WhatsApp group to communicate with other residents.

KCC hosted a meeting at Heuwelland Primary School where the main aim was to educate residents about their rights, and the rights of suspected criminals and also to highlight the benefits of working together to prevent crime.

About 150 concerned residents gathered and were privy to presentations by members of the SAPS, which dealt with a number of issues arising from crime incidents.

Crime scene technician Sergeant Niel van der Merwe, spoke about the importance of evidence gathering, as well as tracking methods to pursue feedback on reported cases.

He stressed the importance of preserving crime scenes to preserve evidence.

Chairperson of the KCC Kathleen Wiborg explained the importance of being part of groups like the KCC.

‘It is important for people to know that KCC is a proper neighbourhood watch group,’ she said.

‘Our chairperson liaises directly with the SAPS on a regular basis, and we have their full support.’
