Burglars break in through mall roof

Thugs steal cell phones and laptops from a shop in Richards Bay shopping centre.

AFTER laying low for a year, it appears the ‘roof robbers’ are back in Richards Bay with electronic items and smart phones on their shopping lists.

On Thursday night, the thieves climbed through the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre’s roof and crawled their way through the mall’s ceiling to enter and raid MTN.

They broke open the vault and stole 20 cell phones as well as laptops.

‘One of our employees opened the store on Friday morning and found it ransacked,’ said Boardwalk’s MTN Store Manager Jeanette Mellors.

‘Lord knows how they got into our vault.’

Last year, the exact same method was used to rob six shops in Boardwalk where they emptied cash tills and pilfered clothing items.

Not long after, burglars gained access into Clicks in the Meerensee Centre through its roof.

Boardwalk Management said they immediately implemented tighter security measures around the centre on Friday.

‘We are investigating the modus operandi and now have additional security in place,’ said Boardwalk Operations Manager, Rob Murgatroyd.

The Richards Bay SAPS detectives are also scrutinising the case, comparing fingerprints taken from the scene with previous cases to establish potential matches.

A case of business break-in was opened.
