SPCA stalwart bids farewell

Empangeni SPCA stalwart Janet Hardcastle retires after 15 years

AFTER almost 15 years of dedicated service, Janet Hardcastle has bid farewell to the Empangeni SPCA.

From answering phone calls, greeting and assisting visitors at reception, Hardcastle has left an indelible mark.

Known for playing many roles in both the community and the SPCA, she put all hands on deck and went from administration to reception, general ‘dogsbody’ and served on the managing committee.

‘We are very grateful to Janet for all the tremendous years she put into our society in order to make it a happy place for the animals and the people behind the animals,’ said Empangeni SPCA Vice Chairwoman Cheryl Whittaker.

‘We shared many tears, much anger, but oh so many more laughs together.’

Hardcastle is also well-known for her part-time work at the Zululand Veterinary Hospital.

Now retired, she will dedicate her time visiting her two daughters and five grandchildren in Gauteng, as well as following her love for bowls.

Although she will be missed by her animal family, there is one who will be thrilled to see the back of her.

Curly the goat will now have more freedom to visit her office, standing on her chair and eating all the office papers left behind on her desk.
