UPDATE : Waves batter Richards Bay coast

GALLERY/VIDEO: Stormy seas pound the Richards Bay port entrance.

MASSIVE seas agitated by gale force winds arrived at Richards Bay late Thursday, as predicted, ensuring a weekend of spectacular viewing along the coastline.

Friday was especially wild, with 40-knot (75km/hr) south-westerly gusts raising swells of six metres.

By Saturday this had settled to 10-knots and four metre swells.

The sight of waves crashing into the southern breakwater as well as the piers at Alkantstrand and Newark beach attracted hundreds of enthralled spectators, many of whom dared to venture close to danger on foot or in vehicles.

However, no incidents were reported and there was little immediate evidence of gross coastal erosion, despite the spring high tides.

Surfers and stand-up paddles were the big beneficiaries, making the most of the seldom-seen big wave rides inside the harbour.
