United front against human trafficking

KZN Human Traffic Task Team on the move.

THE KZN Human Trafficking, Prostitution, Pornography and Brothels Task Team are growing stronger by the day with the addition of experienced, committed volunteers signing up to fight all forms of human trafficking at all levels.

Members of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), specialist advocates, SANDF and SAPS, departments of Home Affairs, Social Development, Immigration and Correctional Services, are joining hands with researchers, doctors and a variety of specialised NGOs in efforts to triple resistance against modern-day slavery in all its atrocious forms.

At a Durban workshop last week, assistant researcher Dr Monique Emser of the University of the Free State spoke on her recent study conducted into the prevalence of the phenomena of human trafficking.

She is also an expert on global politics, unconventional security threats, international relations, cyber warfare, ‘hacktivism’, cyber conflict, political science and research methodology.

She published her paper on Human Trafficking in South Africa, KZN Inter-sectoral Task Team and South African Counter Trafficking Governance.

Keynote speaker Soraya Smith, a registered counsellor in trauma, said human trafficking includes severe abuse and deprivation, is life threatening and can be likened to torture.

She discussed the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and how the condition will effect victims and possible treatments.

The Open Doors Walk to Freedom team covered 130km per day on foot as part of an awareness campaign against human trafficking and traversed three provinces – KZN, Free State and Gauteng – and spokesperson Thora Mansfield reported reaching about four million people, especially in the crucial deep rural areas.
