Mayor puts ‘game changers’ on Richards Bay map

A new Richards Bay airport, Waterfront Park, international convention centre and the extension of the central business district (CBD) are all projects to be fast-tracked as part of uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo’s plan.

A NEW Richards Bay airport, Waterfront Park, international convention centre and the extension of the central business district (CBD) are all projects to be fast-tracked as part of uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo’s plan to turn the port town into a hustling and bustling metropolis.

At a business breakfast held on Thursday, Mhlongo requested uThungulu District Municipality’s support to pitch the ‘game changer’ projects to national government.

‘These catalyst projects are aimed at stimulating the city’s economy to address unemployment and sluggish growth,’ said the Mayor.

‘Together with business and our social partners, we must identify key inclusive growth and employment creation drivers for the benefit of all.’

A larger airport will essentially move the focus from mainly business travellers to cater for more holiday passengers, freight and private aircraft.

Since last year, the municipality has planned for a local waterfront development similar to the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, with its precincts including the Mzingazi Canal, Tuzi Gazi Waterfront, Waterfront Park and Alkantstrand to draw more tourists.

Population to double

But besides the priority for the city to become a tourism mecca, the Mayor stated uMhlathuze will have to keep up with the region’s mushrooming population growth.

‘Currently figures say we have a population of around 335 000 people – a conservative number to say the least.

‘This is expected to double by 2022.

‘It will put huge strain on our infrastructure so we have to plan to improve it to meet future challenges.’

Mhlongo concluded it is time for ‘business unusual’.

‘In partnership with all stakeholders, the city will be the strategic driver and champion of economic development.

‘Ladies and gentlemen, the City of uMhlathuze is open for business.’
