VIDEO: Saving the environment

The World Environment Day 2015 theme is ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care’.

TODAY is World Environment Day and people are called to promote positive environmental action, which will in turn have a positive impact on the planet.

Lack of water and pollution seem to be the prevalent issues facing our region at the moment, with many of the region’s dams starting to run empty owing to the low rainfall figures.

Although the city has not yet implemented water cuts, residents are continually urged to use the resource sparingly.

According to local environmentalist, Duncan Pritchard, more should be done to raise awareness of the need to preserve the environment.

‘Every environmental indicator, from the loss of biodiversity, to greenhouse gasses and water, is on a downward trend. We have known about these issues and risks for over 30 years, yet none of them are improving.’

Pritchard says that the future generations should be thought of.

‘In 30 years’ time, our children will have a planet that is broken. There is ever-increasing population growth with subsequent higher demand for resources.

‘The next generation is in for a very different world unless we curb our current greed and do something positive,’ he said.

He also advises residents to support local businesses which will result in the money and services being circulated in the local economy.

‘Be aware of your impacts. Think about what you eat and where it comes from, what you purchase and what sort of businesses you support.

‘Make informed decisions and support businesses that support good environmental ethics,’ he added.
