A POLICE officer was attacked and strangled in a violent attack by inmates at the eSikhawini SAPS holding cells earlier this afternoon.
The 56-year-old police warrant officer had been conducting his usual rounds when the inmates attacked him, leaving the officer in a critical condition.
Although he was rushed to the nearest hospital, Empangeni SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed that the officer succumbed to his injuries a few minutes ago.
Station Commander Colonel Vusi Mthimkhulu is en route to inform the officer’s family of the tragic incident.
Police are currently interviewing suspects at the holding cells.
