UPDATE: Alfie has taken his last orders

A memorial service was held for well-known ERFC barman, Alfie Gumede.

MOURNERS gathered at Mick Kelly Park on Wednesday afternoon to say their final farewells to Alfie ‘Slick’ Gumede (44).

Alfie worked as a barman at the Empangeni Rugby and Football Club for 29 years, and was well-known by patrons and players alike.

He died on May 24 after he was hit by a car on Main Road in the early hours of the morning.

In a touching moment, colleague Vela Ngema regaled with tales of Alfie’s humour and skills on the pool table.

Club Chairman Simon Harvey paid tribute to Alfie for his many years of loyal service and extended an invitation to patrons to remember his widow and seven-year-old twins in their prayers.

Empangeni Round Table reached out a helping hand, and will help the Gumede children with stationary and books for the next two years.
