Cansa builds on past success

All set for Cancer Day Night Walk on 29 August, so enter now!

CANSA uThungulu has received an award from its national office after raising the most funds in KZN at the 2015 Relay For Life (RFL).

Despite tough economic times the event brought in a whopping R167 000 to support the fight against cancer.

Speaking after the annual RFL Summit, elated CANSA uThungulu Community Mobiliser, Lizzy van Zyl, paid tribute to the volunteer committee, supporters and the broader community.

‘From CANSA’s side I would like to thank all the teams that participated, especially Bell Equipment for the R51 000 they raised.

‘The donations helped us to open up CANSA House in Empangeni to patients who need accommodation, and to appoint a nurse for much-needed services to be delivered in our community.’

Survivors event

Tomorrow (Friday) will see CANSA hosting a Survivors Day at 10am at the Richards Bay Medical Institute, where there will be a guest speaker and treats.

Guests are asked to notify the CANSA office of their attendance for catering purposes.

Meanwhile, planning is well under way for the new look cancer Day Nite Walk, to be hosted on 29 August at the ZCBF Community Park.

The event times have changed, starting at 11am and ending at 11pm, which will allow for children to participate.

‘Teams will dress up according to themed laps and be allowed to fund-raise before and at the event.

‘Registration for entering teams at R50 per walker is now open,’ said committee Chairman Barbara Moscicki .

‘There is no limit as to how many walkers companies or organisations can enter per team for the fun-filled family event.

‘To enter your team, email rbbookings@kbcsa.co.za or contact Eurika Shaw on 035 7890841.

‘We will also have an arts and crafter’s market, as well as an exhibitors arena that will allow for people to showcase their products and services at a minimal fee.’

To register a stand, email Kasia Schulze at kasia.schulze@gmail.com or call 082 8857082.

Help required

‘All proceeds from stand payments will go towards the upgrade of the Helen Ludwig CANSA House in Empangeni,’ said Moscicki.

‘Several items are needed to provide an aftercare recovery service for patients undergoing treatment who are not in a financial position to afford private care.

‘Funds raised will go towards paying for a registered nurse to assist and roll out community early detection and education campaigns.

‘We are also looking to generate enough funds to pay for a caregiver to look after and cook for patients staying over at the house while undergoing treatment.’
