Two baby duikers rescued from poachers

Jeffrey Zikhali saves young duikers in KwaDlangezwa.

ZULULANDER Jeffrey Zikhali is passionate about conservation.

His latest rescue act was saving two young grey duikers from poachers.

The baby buck, which were under two weeks old at the time, were rescued a month apart from the KwaDlangezwa area and immediately taken to CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife).

An avid wildlife enthusiast with a history in public relation roles, including most recently a stint as spokesperson for the KZN Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Zikhali in both cases used his negotiation skills to talk the poachers into handing over the animals to him.

Having successfully got the duikers to safety, Zikhali took to social media to find out what to do and was referred by many to CROW.

The duikers, a male named Dusty and a female named Maria, have settled in well at CROW where they are being housed in a large outdoor enclosure with two other young duiker patients.

All four will be hand reared by CROW’s clinic team during the winter months, after which they will be released back into the wild at a safe location.

Zikhali said he will continue to try and save as many animals as he can and believes that more emphasis needs to be placed on education.

‘People cannot learn to value the lives of all living creatures if they do not receive education about their importance and the role they play in conservation.’
