Order to stop burning at landfill sites

Despite being ordered to put a stop to the burning of landfill sites under its control, burning of the St Lucia dump continues at the hands of Mtubatuba Municipality

THE illegal and environment damaging practice of burning landfill sites by the Mtubatuba Municipality must be brought to an end.

Department of Environmental Affairs’ Chief Director of Communications, Albi Modise, said the burning of landfill sites is not legal as it contravenes air quality laws and poses major health risks, including cancer, to those living in close proximity to the site.

There must be a buffer zone of 200m from communal landfill sites, but under no circumstances are they to be burned.

Apart from the contravention of numerous laws, burning of landfill sites is unhealthy and unsightly, especially at a tourist destination like St Lucia whose dump has been burning continuously for months.

Mtubatuba Municipal spokesperson Mdu Mahlinza gave the assurances that the relevant manager would be informed of the continued burning despite dump operators being ordered to put a stop to it.

On Friday afternoon, however, burning at the St Lucia landfill site continued, its toxic fumes blown across town and across the wetland park.
