Taxi boss nabbed in Sunday sting

Unlicensed firearms swoop lands Mtubatuba taxi owner and three others in jail.

FOUR men, including a taxi owner, were arrested yesterday morning (Sunday) following a sting operation by police in the Ophondweni reserve near Mtubatuba.

Empangeni Crime Intelligence together with members of the National Mobile Train Unit in Durban conducted the intelligence-driven operation in the early hours of the morning.

The four suspects, between the ages of 22 and 53 years-old, were found in possession of seven unlicensed firearms as well as 17 types of live ammunition.

A police-issued pistol with the serial number scratched off as well as two rifles, two revolvers and another two pistols were recovered.

Both rifles had been reported stolen by security companies in Johannesburg in 2002 and 2004 respectively.

The Mtubatuba taxi boss was found with four of the unlicensed firearms. He was arrested and taken to KwaMsane SAP along with the three other suspects.

Ballistics tests will be conducted on all firearms to determine possible connections to other crimes. The men are expected to appear before the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday (today) on charges relating to the possession of unlicensed firearms and illegal ammunition.
