Mtubatuba’s new council sworn in

Newly elected Mtubatuba Mayor, Israel Nyawo, was sworn in at AN inauguration ceremony, along with Mbongiseni Gina as Speaker.

FOLLOWING years of political instability in Mtubatuba, the municipality’s new ANC-led council was inaugurated on Thursday in a ceremony at which COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube issued a stern warning to all councillors against future disruptive behaviour.

‘We have no wish for a repeat of the political infighting we saw in this municipality and we will not take kindly to any breach of the fragile stability Mtubatuba is enjoying today,’ said Dube-Ncube.

The MEC went on to say that while progress was made during the three months the municipality was under the control of COGTA, the department will continue its intervention to ensure continuity and stability over the coming months.

During his acceptance speech, which focused on restoring order in Mtubatuba, addressing poverty and service delivery, the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Israel Nyawo, said, ‘Today marks the rebirth of this municipality. We must cover the lost ground and we dare not fail the people of Mtubatuba again’.

Nyawo also warned that laziness and a lackadaisical attitude among councillors would not be tolerated.

Welcoming the newly elected council, ANC Provincial Secretary Sihle Zikalala echoed the Mayor’s sentiments.

‘It is our view that this council must recover lost ground by hitting the ground running in as far as service delivery is concerned’.
