Working with water

Surrounding schools in Zululand competed in the annual SAICE water competition.

THE South African Institute for Civil Engineers (SAICE) held its annual schools water competition at the UniZulu Science Centre last Thursday.

Eight Zululand schools competed, with each team comprising three students.

The challenge was to build a water distribution network simulating real life networks.

Richards Bay Secondary’s trio were judged the winners of the day, followed by Old Mill High and Birdsview Academy.

SAICE’s Stephen Moult, the organiser of the event, said, ‘Water and civil engineers are both a scarce commodity in our country. Both seem to be taken for granted.

‘This project brings awareness to the way in which water is brought to our homes, and thereby educates teams to treat water with the respect it deserves.’

The winning team will represent the Zululand at the SAICE national water competition later this year.
