NURSING the community of Empangeni back to health for almost 20 years, Dr Benjamin Kayode Afolyan (53) passed away last week while on duty.

The head of casualty at Life Empangeni Garden Clinic died of a sudden heart attack.

At a memorial service last Thursday at the Imbizo Conference Centre, family, friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate the life of a much-loved medical professional.

Paying tribute, grieving patient said he had never before come across such a genuinely compassionate and concerned doctor.

Close friend and colleague, Dr Omowumi Adetiba, said the highly skilful, caring and kind-hearted practitioner will be greatly missed.

‘He was a very hard working man, always ready to go the extra mile. Also, very sociable, he was the life of the party and will always be remembered.’ said Dr Adetiba.

Graduating from the University of Ilorin Medical School in Nigeria in 1987, Dr Afolyan emigrated to South Africa in 1995 and in 1997 took up a post at Life Empangeni Garden Clinic.

In 1998 he started his private practice.
