Gearing up for Mtuba’s by-elections

In an effort to engage with residents of Mtubatuba Municipality in the run-up to Wednesday's by-elections, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu headed up the ANC's Siyanqoba Rally at KwaMsane sports ground on Sunday

KWAMSANE sports ground was filled to capacity on Sunday during the ANC’s Siyanqoba Rally, held in the run-up to tomorrow’s (Wednesday) hotly contested by-elections in Mtubatuba.

Under the guidance of KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, the ANC’s provincial leadership held the rally to interact with members of the public and discuss the party’s plans for Mtubatuba should its councillors be elected to run the municipality.

Service delivery and fulfilling the needs of Mtubatuba residents were at the core of Mchunu’s message, as the ANC acknowledged Mtubatuba Municipality has, for many years, failed its people.

According to the ANC, Mtubatuba did not receive the development of other areas while under the control of opposition parties, nor did the situation improve when the ANC and National Freedom Party (NFP) enter into a coalition.

Mchunu on Sunday reaffirmed the ANC’s desire to be solely in charge of Mtubatuba Municipality and to see residents appreciate the area in which they live.

Mtubatuba Municipality was under administration from September 2012 until council was dissolved by Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube in February this year.

Local government legislation dictates a new council must be elected within 90 days of dissolution, hence tomorrow’s by-elections.

Meanwhile, Inkhatha Freedom Party (IFP) National Chairperson, Blessed Gwala, said ‘only uneducated minds will vote for the ANC’.

‘Any serious minded South African should be looking for an alternative party to replace the non-performing ANC administrations at municipal level. ‘People are now fed up with poor service delivery and will not continue to vote for the ANC at local government level,’ said Gwala in a statement.

He went on to say ANC-run municipalities show it is a government bereft of ideas, policies and credibility and that voters should be ‘mindful of who they vote for during the local government elections since a wrong choice of candidates will have dire consequences for the entire municipality for the next five years’.
