Human trafficking workshop in Richards Bay

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation to host human trafficking workshop.

FOLLOWING a successful anti-slavery awareness campaign by a local church, the organised crime sector and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation will be presenting a human trafficking workshop to key community stakeholders.

Detective Warrant Officer AN Dyanand, an experienced investigator in the field, will address the handpicked attendees at the AGS Kerk Sonder Mure on 29 April to empower and educate delegates of welfare organisations, schools, churches, the business sector and volunteer organisations to spread the awareness further into local communities.

The workshop is co-hosted by Pastor Caroline Pitout, who spearheaded local participation in the international Shine a Light on Slavery campaign.

Pitout said the strength of awareness, prevention and ultimately successful law enforcement lie in pooling all available civilian resources to assist police in their task.

The Directorate is also expected to roll out the initiative further with specialised workshops and training for prosecutors and police.

Researcher Dr Monique Emser found that counting only cases reported as human trafficking, 2 958 people were trafficked through African countries outside South Africa from January to December last year for sexual exploitation, domestic servitude and forced recruitment as child soldiers.
