VIDEO: Cow killed in John Ross collision

Roaming cow killed in collision with a motorist.

WARNINGS that went unheeded for months has resulted in another accident involving a motorist colliding with a cow.

This morning the animal was knocked over and killed on the John Ross Parkway in Alton, leaving the vehicle severely damaged, but the driver unhurt.

The ongoing problem of roaming cattle in Zululand’s suburbs has left local residents fed up, more so at the fact that no solution is being implemented.

In February the uMhlathuze Municipality indicated that a pound was planned and herders or cattle owners would be required to pay a fine when reclaiming their stray animals.

Ward councilors welcomed this plan as it would remove the danger from our roads.

The municipality’s Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, said, ‘The City has not made any pronouncement on this issue and it is still an internal process.

The City will announce any development in this regard.’

Empangeni SPCA Inspector Roland Fivaz urged the municipality to intervene and take action, as this growing issue has become a serious hazard on the road.

‘This cattle problem is going to get worse because of winter grazing. I am expecting at least 10 cows on the R34 every week. And this is excluding other public areas.

‘Last year this time we experienced the same problem.’ he said.
