Dover High in turmoil

Empangeni school pupils torched two water tanks when protests turned violent this morning.

DOVER High School pupils torched two water tanks when protests turned violent within the school premises on Monday morning.

The angry pupils are reportedly demanding that the school principal step down.

The rioting began before the Easter school break, when pupils tried to torch and smash the teachers’ vehicles.

uThungulu District Education Director David Chonco said, ‘We heard this morning Dover High pupils were rioting, because they are disgruntled with the school principal.

‘Reports received are that they torched two water tanks, and I am organising a team of education authorities to go to the school and investigate.

‘It is said after starting off in class this morning, the pupils then started demonstrating.’

Reliable sources from the school revealed the problem began way before the schools broke for the Easter vacations, and a teacher’s vehicle was stoned, breaking the window in the process.

‘Then when they came back this morning (Monday), while a parents’ meeting was ongoing, they began toy-toying, demanding the school principal must go.

‘All teachers’ vehicles have been removed to outside the school premises for safety, and there are no classes going on as we speak,’ said the source.
