New way for Cansa walk

The Cancer Day and Night Walk will be on 29 August this year.

THE annual CANSA Relay For Life is this year being replaced by the Cancer Day and Night Walk in a bold bit to make the event more exciting and ‘user friendly’.

Instead of a dusk to dawn ‘through the night’ event as in the past, the new format will take place from 11am to 11pm on 29 August at the ZCBF Community Park in Richards Bay.

‘The planning committee would like to appeal to companies to support this event and sponsor some of the services and funds needed to make it a huge success,’ said Chairperson Barbara Moscicki.

‘The aim is to ensure all the funds collected will go to local initiatives and activities that will benefit cancer patients from the Zululand region.’

CANSA uThungulu has identified the following needs at the CANSA house in Empangeni:

• Funds to cover the salary for a professional nurse at R20 000 pm (annually R240 000). The nurse will see to patients undergoing treatment and provide talks at corporate/community cancer awareness events if and when needed. This will also include conducting pre-screening tests at community initiatives as part of the CANSA awareness campaign.

• Funds to cover the salary for a caregiver attending to patients staying at the CANSA Care Home at R4 000 per month (annually R48 000).

• Screening funding to go into the community and assist CANSA to lower costs of consumables and lab tests – minimum R50 000.

• Have the exterior and interior of the care house repainted, plus the installation of electric fencing and general maintenance.

Entries

‘There will be no limit as to how many walkers a company can enter as a team.

‘The cost per walker is R50 per person and team members can dress to a theme of their choice or company branding to show their support,’ said Moscocki.

‘Teams can compete for the coveted award of most funds raised before and at the event.

‘Put your challenge/pledge out there and help us make a difference.

‘This will ensure smaller teams may enter and have the opportunity to fund-raise as well.

‘The Zululand Observer is the event’s media partner and the Zululand Chamber of Business has offered its venue free of charge as their contribution to support this worthy cause.’

An exhibitors arena will allow companies to exhibit their services or products at R500 per 3x3m stand, while arts and crafters can showcase their goods at R200 per 3x3m stand.

There will be all day entertainment and activities to keep visitors busy.
