Four life sentences for Umhlali rapist

The KwaDukuza Regional Court convicted and sentenced Selvan Govender.

THE KwaDukuza Regional Court convicted and sentenced Selvan Govender (34) to four terms of life imprisonment for rape.

The court heard that on 3 April 2009 a 19-year-old girl was at her home in Umhlali when Govender approached her and promised her employment.

He took her with him for an interview, but while on the way he dragged her to a nearby sugarcane field and repeatedly raped her at a knife point.

The victim managed to escape in the afternoon and reported the matter to the police.

In a second incident on 5 May, also in Umhlali, Govender approached a 17-year-old girl and enticed her to his home.

He threatened her and also dragged his victim into a nearby sugarcane field where he repeatedly raped her.

Charges of rape and kidnapping were opened at KwaDukuza SAPS.

The KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit took over the investigating and arrested Govender.

After several court appearances he was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment for the rape he committed in April, another two terms of life imprisonment for the rape committed in May, as well as three years for each count of kidnapping in both cases.
