School signs rhino pledge

Entire school signs rhino anti-poaching declaration.

AT a special assembly last week, Richards Bay High School handed over signatures of every learner who had signed the International Youth Rhino Summit Declaration to the Project Rhino ‘Let their voices be heard’ team.

It was an emotional moment when the learners stood and, led by Micah van Schalkwyk of Project Rhino, repeated the declaration aimed at eradicating poaching through educating the youth.

Selected learners, staff and invited guests, including Uthungulu Deputy Mayor Thulani Mashaba and Mondigroup’s Leonard Mbokazi were invited to sign the Declaration Book.

As a symbolic act of protest, the learners handed over a rhino horn made from clay and hair to be used by the team when they deemed it appropriate.

Presentations were made by Lawrence Munro – head of the anti-poaching unit in KZN, Richard Mabunda – Rhino Art Ambassador and Micah van Schalkwyk – head of Project Rhino as well as the five young RBHS pupils who had attended the International World Youth Rhino Summit at the Hluhluwe- iMfolozi Park last September.

The Project Rhino team intends to take the Declaration and Resolution from the Summit around the world and use it as a tool to call the youth in all countries to take a stand against wildlife crime.

Although the Declaration has already been signed by various organisations, Richards Bay High is the first school group to sign roll.
