Meet Zululand’s great crocheter

Crocheting has become more than just Salome’s ‘me time’, she uses her skill to assist DICE with its Winter Warmth initiative.

WHO would have thought that a skein of wool could ignite so much happiness?

For Salome Smit, a humble 55-year-old widow and mother of two, wool has brought her more than just happiness, it brought her serenity and relaxation. Salome started crocheting when she was a free spirited little child.

‘At a tender age of eight, my grandma sat me down and taught me how to crochet. I never quite understood her fascination about it until now,’ said Salome.

Crocheting has become more than just Salome’s ‘me time’, she also uses her skill to assist Do I Care Enough (DICE) organisation with its Winter Warmth initiative – a drive dedicated to bringing a little warmth to those who are less fortunate during those cold Zululand months.

Almost two years ago Salome read about the initiative in the Zululand Observer and together with her daughter-in-law Mandy Smit started crocheting blankets.

‘It takes me about two weeks to complete a blanket, but when I get into the groove and dedicate all my time to crocheting, it takes me one week.’

Salome recently dropped off 15 strikingly beautiful blankets at the ZO offices, before leaving to Gauteng where she will now live with her sister.

‘Even though I will be 1000 kilometres way, I will still continue supporting the Winter Warmth initiative and post all my completed blankets. For as long as DICE provides the wool, I am most obliged to work my crocheting magic for this worthy cause.’
