Commotion as bees go on attack in Richards Bay

More bee attacks in Zululand this week.

PUPILS at Sekusilezulu Crèche and Mzingazi Primary fled the school grounds on Tuesday morning as a swarm of bees enveloped the rooftop of a building next door.

Local residents ran out of their homes to see what the commotion was about, and tried everything possible to get rid of the aggressive bees.

A group of young men burnt tyres with the hope of chasing the aggravated bees away, but were unsuccessful.

Community Policing Forum member and Mzingazi resident Sharon Mdletshe was at the scene of the incident and described it to be somewhat chaotic.

‘There were people running all over the road, trying to escape from these bees. Many people were stung,’ she said.

Patients were rushed to the Crossroads Clinic where they received treatment.

According to Richards Bay honey farm owner, Barrie Barnard, people need to be extra cautious when the bees move in.

‘Get out of the way and go indoors as fast as possible. People should refrain from using sprays or burning tyres as a means to remove the hive, because this will result in the bees becoming aggressive and that is when they will sting.

Barnard added that Richards Bay’s current hot and humid weather conditions add to the prevalence of bees.
