Two rapists jailed for 10 years

The men both faced charges of rape, in separate cases.

JUSTICE was served when two men were sentenced for rape and armed robbery.

Jabulani Velenkosini Zondi (56) appeared at the Empangeni Regional Court and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the rape of a then 14-year-old girl.

The girl who was en route to school had been waiting at the bus stop when Zondi offered her a lift.

Zondi drove past the school and proceeded to a nearby sugarcane field in Felixton where he threatened the girl with a firearm while he raped her.

On the same day at the Mtunzini Regional Court, Velenkosini Zondo (56) was also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape and five years for armed robbery.

Using a similar modus operandi as the first assailant, the victim was at a bus stop in Richards Bay when she was given a lift by Zondo.

He drove to a neighbouring forest where he also threatened the 23-year-old woman with a firearm, robbed her of her cell phone and money and then raped her.

‘This conviction is a victory for those who wage a daily battle defending our women and children.

‘We hope that this will serve as a warning to cowards who intend to exploit those that are vulnerable in society,’ said KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
