Home Affairs office in a mess

Union demands answers over state of Empangeni Home Affairs office building.

THE National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) has expressed its dismay at the poor state of the Empangeni Home Affairs office building.

NUPSAW Regional Chairperson Skhumbuzo Msibi said his union has been inundated with complaints from the community regarding the office.

‘The office is untidy. Litter is strewn everywhere, informal traders do business there and there is confusion about the entrance,’ Msibi said.

He said he was also shocked to learn that the office has no public toilets to cater for the scores of people come from far.

‘This office reflects a very poor image of our country. It is not only used by the local communities, but international visitors also make use of it.

‘Recently there was an incident where a truck from a neighbouring hardware business broke down in the entrance of the premises, and officials were forced to leave their vehicles behind and use public transport to get home,’ Msibi said.

‘You go to Home Affairs offices in Richards Bay, eShowe or even Melmoth and you will not find this circus that is here in Empangeni.’

Msibi said the union has decided to write to the management of the facility, demanding to know how are they planning to address the concerns.’
