Drug cases in Richards Bay court

Juma Omar was caught red-handed with 18 pieces of heroin, weighing 5,06 grams.

A TANZANIAN citizen was one of two accused who pleaded guilty to possession of heroin when appearing in the Richards Bay District Court on Monday.

This followed successful stop searches by police in the CBD area, where the ill fruits of local drug trafficking rings were confiscated.

Juma Omar (28) admitted to possessing a dangerous dependence producing substance after being caught red-handed with 18 pieces of heroin, weighing 5,06 grams.

He told the court it was for personal use and that he was going to use it for ‘a long time’.

He was sentenced to 90 days imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Mondli Nxumalo (34) pleaded guilty to possession of one parcel of whoonga containing heroin, weighing 0.06 grams, after a stop search by police at Taxi City in November last year.

He also said in his plea explanation that he bought it for R15 for personal use.

He was sentenced to R3 000 or three years imprisonment, of which half was suspended for five years on condition that he is not again convicted of a similar offence.

Bhekithemba Xaba (23) of Arboretum pleaded not guilty to possession of heroin in September last year and his trial was remanded until 31 March.
