Galloping to the top

Young pupil takes horse riding to new heights.

FUN and funky and ‘galloping’ her way to the top is 11-year-old Rachel Mahiyama, who is ready to take her horse riding to the next level.

The Grade 6 pupil from Empangeni Preparatory School has been fuelling her love for horses since she began riding at the tender age of two.

‘I have two horses named Rusty Eagle and Dynamite,’ says Rachel. ‘I have been competing since the age of three and being an only child, I have had a lot of support from my parents.’

Rachel has taken part in a number of shows around the country, including Durban and Johannesburg. Her most recent competition took place in Meerensee this month and saw her claiming first place in two categories.

Growing up in Empangeni, Rachel has made many friends who support her.

When down from her ‘high horse’, Rachel enjoys doing maths and sport and was Junior Victrix Ludorum in swimming and athletics.

‘My biggest dream is to do show jumping in the Olympics one day and later become either a doctor or a lawyer.’
