Bogus cop arrested

A man was cuffed for impersonating a police officer and defrauding members of the SAPS out of thousands of rands.

IMPERSONATING a police officer, pleading penury and defrauding members of the SAPS and locals of thousands of rands finally caught up with Bhubhubhu Reserve resident Sanele Sandile Nkosi (22), who was arrested in KwaMbonambi.

Nkosi, wanted for several fraud and theft cases, appeared at the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on Friday and is due to face the same charges in Kokstad, Ladysmith and Empangeni.

KwaMsane Tactical Response Team and Empangeni Crime Intelligence together with the Eastern Cape Hawks followed leads and recovered numerous sim cards and cellphones, leading them to Nkosi’s whereabouts.

‘He used the names of high ranking officials within the SAPS and claimed to need money for airtime or to purchase goods,’ said a member involved in the investigation.

‘A very brazen man, he would directly call the commander on the office line, not the toll free number,’ he added.

Further to this, Nkosi would prey on the sympathy of community members, claiming he needed transport money as his wife and daughter had allegedly been in an accident and were in a critical state at a Durban hospital.
